WAEC RELEASED RESULT

THE West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released results of the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68 per cent obtaining five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics.
But it is bad news for about 200, 000 candidates from the 13 outstanding debtor-states as the examination body promised not to upload the results of their candidates on the council’s website. This is in execution of the threat it made earlier if the affected states failed to pay up before the results are released.
Only six states had defrayed their indebtedness at the expiration of the ultimatum. Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Charles Eguridu, declined naming the debtor-states. He promised to do so at a press conference he gave, where he appealed to the affected states to pay up or face being named and shamed. All efforts to make the HNO release the names failed, hiding behind the plea by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF) to give the debtor states more time.
Eguridu, at the press conference yesterday in Lagos, stated that there was a marginal increase in this year’s result when compared to that of last year, where 529, 425 candidates representing 31.28 per cent obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics. He said that a total of 1,605, 248 candidates registered for the examination, out of which 1,593,442, consisting of 864,096 males and 729,346 females sat for the examination.
In a breakdown, the HNO said of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, “1,498,069, representing 94.01 per cent have their results fully released, while 95,373, representing 5.99 per cent have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors, mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.
Such errors are being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently. “Of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination, 758, 849, representing 47.62 per cent obtained six credits and above; 949, 862, representing 59.61 per cent obtained five credits and above, while 1,114,988, representing 69.97 per cent obtained credit and above in four subjects.
“In addition, 1, 295,915 candidates, representing 78.81 per cent obtained credit and above in three subjects, while 1, 376,743 candidates, representing 86.40 per cent obtained credit and above in two subjects. However, a total of 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68 per cent, obtained credit in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.”
The WAEC boss disclosed that results of 118,101 candidates, representing 7.41 per cent were being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice. “The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigerian Examinations Committee (NEC) of the council in due course for consideration.
The committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools,” he said. He said that a total number of 109 blind candidates registered for, and sat the examination, from which 20 candidates, representing 18.34 per cent obtained credit in five subjects, including English language and mathematics. He advised candidates who sat for the May/June 2015 WASSCE to check the details of their performances on the council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org within 24 hours. On the fate of government-sponsored candidates, whose governors were yet to pay their registration fees, he said:
“After my pronouncement, a few of the debtor-states responded by paying their debts fully or partially; a few others made promises, indicating their willingness to pay as soon as they are able to do so. Others have not made any efforts in addressing the matter. “After reviewing the situation, the council has decided that the results of government-sponsored candidates of indebted states would be released if such states endeavour to produce bank guarantees, so that the council will be assured that the fees will be paid.
This decision is in appreciation of the general prevailing economic challenges in the country, and in order not to jeopardize the educational careers of the candidates of the indebted states.” Eguridu said that due to the high incidents of loss or missing certificates, the council has introduced “Attestation of Results,” which can be obtained on request, to serve as replacement for lost or missing certificates, since we do not issue certificates twice.”

FG overrules JAMB on new admission policy

he Federal Government has overruled the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on its new admission policy that recently sparked off protests in parts of the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. MacJohn Nwaobiala, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Tuesday, after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari of his ministry’s activities and challenges at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
JAMB had, at its 2015 Combined Policy Meeting, adopted a policy whereby candidates of universities with surplus applicants for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations are reassigned to other universities with lower number of applicants than their capacities.
Protest started at the University of Lagos when the institution’s authorities announced that only candidates whose names were officially forwarded by JAMB are eligible to participate in this year’s UNILAG Post-UTME.
Nwaobiala told reporters that the decision was jointly taken at a stakeholders’ meeting that had parents and others in attendance.
He said because of the dust raised by the development, the Federal Government had commenced consultation with the aim of identifying where adjustments could be made.
He however said students that made the cut-off marks have been directed to go and write post-UME examinations in their schools of first choice since that was the bone of contention.
Nwaobiala said, “This JAMB thing has been there. As the policy making body, when these issues were raised, they raised in a stakeholders meeting. We normally have what we call the policy meeting. Everything about admission are discussed with parents and other stakeholders at the meeting.
“These are decisions that we collectively took. However, we have a listening hear. We have taken a lot of the issues raised into consideration and we are consulting to see the adjustments we can make here and there.
“The directive has been given. All the students that made the cut-off marks have been told to go and write post-UME examinations in their schools of first choice. After, they can go to their schools of second choice. That has been the bone of contention.”
On the threat by the West African Examinations Council to withhold the results of candidates in 19 states, who wrote the May/June 2015 WASSCE following unpaid examination fees by the state governments, Nwaobiala appealed to states to fulfil their promises.

CANDIDATES PROTEST AGAINST UNILAG CUT-OFF MARK

Hundreds of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination candidates on Wednesday morning stormed the University of Lagos to protest against the decision of the institution to stop them from doing the forthcoming post-UTME.
The candidates alleged that the authorities of university, in liaison with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, had rolled out a new admission procedure that prevented them from taking the examination to secure admission into the ivory tower.
Their allegation comes as UNILAG and JAMB defended their different positions in the exercise.
The Head of Public Relations, JAMB, Dr. Benjamin Fabian, said the board did not intentionally exclude any candidate.
He said, “We are only trying to ensure that candidates have better chances for admission this year unlike what obtained in the past. This time around, we do not want to wait till universities end their first choice admissions. We do not want some candidates to forfeit their admission easily. By next week, we shall release the national distribution list that will open more opportunities for them.”
The Registrar, UNILAG, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, said the university was only working with the post- UTME screening list sent by JAMB.
According to her, only candidates whose names were forwarded to the University of Lagos by JAMB are eligible for the 2015/2016 post-UTME screening.
Meanwhile, many of the candidates, who came with their parents, had converged on the university entrance as early as 7am, chanting solidarity songs and demanding the removal of the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde.
Their action not only caused gridlock at the entrance of the university, it later resulted in the closure of the gate.
The protesters, led by the President, Association of Tutorial School Operators of Nigeria, Mr. Sodunke Oludotun, later forced their way into the university.
According to the protesters, the university upped its cut-off to 250 marks against the recommended 180 marks by JAMB.
JAMB, on July 14 had after its sixth consultative meeting with stakeholders in Abuja, pegged the cut-off mark to 180 for candidates seeking university admission and 150 marks for those seeking places in polytechnics and colleges of education.
Oludotun, who spoke to our correspondent, described the upping of the cut-off marks at UNILAG as illegal.

He said, “Contrary to Prof. Dibu Ojerinde’s announcement of 180 as a minimum score, UNILAG has started selling post-UTME form for only the candidates that scored 250 and above and thereby putting the lives of about 24, 000 qualified and prospective candidates in a state of uncertainty and despair. We are protesting to call the attention of the Federal Government to this injustice.”
